Strutt Studios Redesigns Paddington Flagship Store

Black Blaze, an Australian fragrance label, has reworked its Paddington flagship store with the help of Strutt Studios, resulting in a small retail interior that showcases restraint and trust in its materials. The store, which is just 36 square metres, has been designed to deepen the brand’s existing identity rather than tear it up and start from scratch.

The brief for the project was to create a space that reflected the brand’s growth and refinement, with a focus on depth, permanence, and quiet confidence. Strutt Studios took cues from Black Blaze’s updated packaging palette, translating deeper hues and tactile finishes into an architectural experience.

Inside the store, the material story takes centre stage. Warm timber lines the joinery, while cork cladding softens the walls and a clay-toned tiled floor grounds the compact footprint. Textured paint, mustard upholstery, and slim linear lighting build richness through contrast and shadow rather than ornament.

Concealed lighting washes the layered walls, and a timber-framed shopfront pulls the eye off busy Oxford Street into the calm. Display is folded into the architecture itself, with an island counter, a dining-style table, wall shelving, and a single plinth, allowing the products to hold the eye.

The design of the store is considered and restrained, with a focus on creating a quietly immersive experience. According to Strutt Studios managing director Sophie Bowers, “This project explores how a physical environment can mature alongside a brand.” Project director Amira Nahas frames it as an exercise in editing, saying “The success of this project came from resisting the temptation to over-design.”

By distilling the palette and allowing materiality, shadow, and atmosphere to take the lead, the designers created a retail experience that feels quietly immersive. The whole thing is pitched to slow you down, to browse, linger, and take a scent in properly. On a strip that turns over fast, Black Blaze is a store designed to age well alongside the brand it houses.

The store’s design is also a reflection of the brand’s minimalist leanings and its connection to sculptural elements, such as a Japanese-inspired ritual hanging.

The result of the redesign is a mature retail environment that trusts its materials to carry the story. The store’s compact footprint is used to great effect, with each element carefully considered to create a sense of depth and permanence.

As a retail design, the Black Blaze flagship store is a success because it resists the urge to overreach. Instead, it focuses on creating a quietly immersive experience that allows the products to take centre stage. The store’s design demonstrates the power of restraint and careful consideration in retail design, and it will likely age well alongside the brand it houses.

They have achieved a sense of calm.
