Cologne's Bühnen Köln Theatre Reopens After 14-Year Renovation - theatre renovation
For residents and visitors, the theatre’s reopening means a revitalised cultural hub in the heart of Cologne, with upgraded public spaces and improved accessibility.

After 14 years of refurbishment, Cologne’s Bühnen Köln municipal theatre has reopened to the public, following a grand reopening festival on 19 and 20 September 2026.

The complex, one of the city’s most important cultural meeting places, closed for a major renovation project led by HPP Architects, marking the end of a significant gap in Cologne’s cultural environment.

HPP Architects’ Expertise

HPP Architects, with nearly 100 years of experience, brought their expertise in cultural buildings, construction within existing contexts, and the treatment of protected buildings to this project, ensuring a respectful and purposeful approach to the renovation.

Their portfolio includes major projects such as the renovation of the Tonhalle in Dusseldorf, the opera and playhouse in Leipzig, and the recent renovation of the protected Castle Burg in Solingen, showcasing their competence in handling sensitive cultural projects.

The result is a gross floor area of 66,150 m², comprising 16,900 m² of new build and 49,250 m² of refurbished existing buildings.

“Now the architecture once again reflects the purpose for which it was created: a space for opera and theatre, for encounters and culture – in the centre of Cologne’s inner city,” says Remigiusz Otrzonsek, Senior Partner of HPP Architects, responsible for the project, emphasising the successful blend of preservation and progression in the renovation.
