Camberwell House is a fifteen-level mixed-use building situated directly above Camberwell Junction in Melbourne. Above Zero, the boutique developer known for Glyndon and Rondure House, is behind the construction. The firm has established a reputation for prioritizing quality and craft over rapid development schedules. For this project, the stated goal is to deliver a design that feels timeless and built to last.
Design team and approach
The project involves a collaboration between four distinct disciplines. Architecture is led by Cera Stribley, interiors by Golden, outdoor design by Florian Wild, and lighting by artist Nicole Lawrence. The collaboration of these firms intends to pull all elements of the development in the same direction to create a cohesive result.
The building’s podium is clad in marble. This material choice picks up the arched forms found in the surrounding streetscape. The design aims to ground the structure rather than dominate the view. Full-height bronze-framed windows fill the facade. These windows are positioned to draw long views toward the City and the Dandenong Ranges. As the day progresses, the light entering the residences shifts accordingly. Balconies are designed to layer these views with greenery, with the planting selected by Florian Wild.

Interiors and amenities
Inside the building, Golden has designed the interiors to reflect daily rituals. The layout of each apartment is structured to prioritize ease of living. The apartments include mud rooms, a feature borrowed from grand New York apartments, and double-island kitchens. These kitchens are fitted with fully integrated V-Zug appliances, a Swiss marque chosen for its precision and understated design.
The materials used, including natural marble, warm timber, and gentle tonal shifts, are selected for their tactility as much as their appearance. Even the lighting is treated as a material, drawn across surfaces to enhance the depth of the finishes.
Nicole Lawrence contributed feature lighting fixtures. Her background in gold and silversmithing influences the design of the building’s fixtures. Her hand-blown wall sconces and pendants are crafted entirely by hand. No two pieces are quite alike, as each retains the impressions left in the glass and metal during the making process. This creates a soft, warm counterpoint to the architectural and interior design.
The amenity offering is extensive. Residents have access to a swimming pool, spa, sauna, and gym. A private massage room and a private guest suite are available for visiting family and friends. Other facilities include a golf simulator, a library, and resident lounges. The project also features “Chairman’s Lounges,” which offer privacy rather than spectacle.

Site context and perspective
The location is minutes from Camberwell Market and the Rivoli cinema, situated right on the junction. Proximity to these landmarks serves as a key benefit of the site. Anthony Demarco, Development Director at Above Zero, stated that the project is designed to feel grounded and enduring. He described the homes as suitable for people who value space, wellness, and design. The approach involves architecture, interiors, and lighting working as one unit rather than competing for attention. The Camberwell House display suite is now open by appointment.
The strategy employed by Above Zero relies heavily on bespoke craftsmanship and imported materials to differentiate the property in a competitive market. While this approach creates a distinct visual identity, it also introduces complexity regarding long-term maintenance. The preservation of high-end finishes and bespoke features in a high-density residential environment often requires significant ongoing resources and care.
