The Weifang Mi Bookstore opened in August 2026 inside a bustling Shandong shopping mall.

The Weifang Mi Bookstore, which opened in August 2026, represents the latest expansion of Reading Mi, a Chinese bookstore chain that has transformed into a cultural gathering place for urban families. Located in a busy shopping mall in Weifang, Shandong, the store redefines reading as an immersive rather than transactional experience. Unlike conventional bookshops, it integrates communal areas with private reading nooks, catering to visitors who seek both social interaction and solitude.

Design inspired by local heritage

The bookstore’s architecture draws from two key elements of Weifang’s identity: the city’s famous kites and the enclosed courtyard layouts of traditional Shandong homes. PANORAMA Design Group, the firm responsible for the project, organized the space around a central axis, with bookshelves arranged along the perimeter to guide visitors inward. This configuration mirrors the symmetry of classic quadrangle courtyards while introducing a contemporary interpretation.

The ceiling incorporates kite-inspired frameworks, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow that mimic the sensation of kites drifting above a courtyard. The design avoids conventional structural lines, instead relying on tension and negative space to create a tranquil atmosphere. Open zones for conversation sit alongside enclosed alcoves for quiet reflection, ensuring the space accommodates diverse visitor needs without sacrificing its serene character.

The name Mi itself carries philosophical significance, evoking an ancient Chinese concept of uncovering meaning in unseen spaces. This theme permeates the store’s identity, positioning it as a refuge from the digital age’s relentless stimulation. The 1,050-square-meter location, developed in collaboration between China Overseas Land & Investment and Shenzhen Friendship Book City, reinforces the connection to Weifang’s kite-making tradition.

Experiential retail meets cultural preservation

The store’s layout encourages exploration through its central bookshelves, which serve as a focal point while allowing visitors to meander into smaller, semi-enclosed areas. This flexibility supports varied activities—whether parents with children, solitary readers, or book discussion groups.

Design Philosophy and Cultural Integration

The bookstore’s design reflects a deliberate fusion of traditional and modern elements. The central bookshelf arrangement and symmetrical layout replicate the enclosed, inward-focused structure of classic Weifang courtyards. This spatial concept supports a sense of intimacy while maintaining openness.

The lighting system, inspired by kite imagery, uses tension-based frameworks to project dynamic light patterns. These effects create a calming atmosphere, reinforcing the store’s role as a cultural retreat. The integration of local heritage avoids overt decoration, embedding meaning into the physical environment.

Expanding PANORAMA’s legacy

Weifang Mi Bookstore marks another achievement for PANORAMA, which has earned over 200 international awards, including the Red Dot Award and Architizer A+Awards. The firm’s portfolio spans corporate interiors, cultural institutions, and retail projects, all characterized by a focus on human-centered experiences. This latest venture continues the pattern of adapting local identity to contemporary design challenges—a strategy that has appealed to clients such as China Resources and New World Development.
