Instead of Keeping This Vintage Pine Hutch Brown - vintage pine hutch
An abandoned vintage pine hutch was found beside a public Portland road.

Dark brown coating enveloped the solid pine hutch from its broad crown down to the base cabinet, displaying scratches, dents and worn areas that reveal long-term use. Kate of Heir and Space discovered the piece after a contact learned it had been abandoned recently beside a public Portland road.

Kate from Heir and Space took the hutch to her workshop where she made repairs to damaged sections and used a combination of paint, stain, open storage, and new hardware to give it a fresh look.

The original brown finish had been applied to the entire hutch, including the crown, shelves, worktop, drawers, and lower cabinet, with three paneled doors providing storage at the base, but years of use had taken its toll, leaving scars on the pine surface.

She sanded off the old finish on the worktop. Then she applied a honey-toned stain. This highlighted the knots and grain of the wood. She sealed it with several coats for a smooth surface.

A custom-mixed duck egg blue paint was used to create a layered look, with two coats forming the final layer, and then distressed to reveal earlier colors, before being sealed with dark wax.

The backboard and interior were painted a custom-mixed buttermilk color, providing a pale background for the three open shelves, and allowing white dishes to stand out, while the vertical boards retained their original construction.

She added new hardware to the piece. The wider drawers feature cup pulls. The smaller center drawers have round knobs. The old pulls were removed. A cracked lower door led to the removal of both outer doors.

The finished hutch features duck egg blue, honey-stained wood, and buttermilk paint. Woven baskets fill the open compartments at either end of the base. The center cabinet and drawer storage remain in place. The new design is functional.
