7 Ways To Produce Good Asphalt Road
Asphalt roads are still an option for paving roads in various areas. The use of asphalt for roads has a number of advantages, such as a smoother road surface so that road users become more comfortable in driving and the black color on the asphalt makes the psychology of road users more comfortable. But it is often found that asphalt roads are damaged very quickly and require a lot of maintenance by tarmacers. For that, consider the ways that can be taken to get a good asphalt road.
1. Compacting the road foundation
A good and strong asphalt road is influenced by road work from the beginning. If at the beginning the work is not right, then the quality of the resulting road is not optimal. The age of the asphalt road is not able to reach the estimated age standard. As a result of improper workmanship, the asphalt road will soon be damaged, reduce the flexibility of the asphalt and the asphalt surface will be uneven.
The initial compaction stage in the manufacture of asphalt roads is the compaction stage of the road foundation. This stage is carried out after the road body is formed. The soil needs to be compacted to be able to withstand the load on it. This compaction stage is carried out using a vibrator roller and bulldozer in order to obtain an optimal density.
If the soil is really solid, then it can be continued by adding foundation material in the form of river stone. This foundation material must also be ensured to be really solid. Compacting the foundation material is done using a tandem roller. This compacted layer by layer will make the road structure have a strong load carrying capacity.
2. Compact the asphalt properly
After compaction of the foundation material has been completed, further compaction can be carried out with a tandem roller or steel wheel compactor. It started with a dump truck that poured hot mix into the asphalt finisher and then spread it on the road surface. Furthermore, the tandem roller is in charge of following the asphalt finisher to compact the road surface.
The compaction process is continued with the next stage of compaction. This compaction is carried out with a rubber wheel compactor. This tool moves following the compaction in the previous stage. After that proceed with the final compaction using a steel wheel compactor without vibration.
The asphalt compaction process must be completed before the asphalt reaches a temperature below 850C or depending on the type of asphalt used. If compaction is carried out below 850C, the aggregate in the asphalt mixture will not be able to bind to each other. As a result, the strength of the asphalt road is lower than it should be.
3. Build a good drainage system
The drainage system around asphalt roads greatly affects the strength of asphalt roads. Poor drainage system will make asphalt roads quickly damaged and potholes. Asphalt roads are not resistant to waterlogging. The scouring of water on the asphalt roads causes the asphalt layer to peel off and eventually form small holes that are getting bigger. Therefore, build a good drainage system to speed up the drying process of asphalt roads, especially in the rainy season.
4. Ensure asphalt road load
Not all loads can be borne by the asphalt road structure. Therefore, it is better to make sure that the vehicle that crosses the asphalt road does not exceed the load that the road structure can bear. Heavy capacity vehicles should be directed to use roads with concrete construction.
5. Mixing asphalt and plastic waste
Tests continue to be carried out to obtain asphalt mixtures that can improve the quality of asphalt so that the asphalt becomes stronger and more durable. One of the trials that have been carried out is by mixing asphalt with plastic waste. This method is proven to make asphalt 40% stronger than asphalt without a mixture of plastic waste.
The plan, the asphalt with a mixture of plastic waste will be used for road maintenance. Currently, trials of the use of mixed asphalt have been carried out in Bekasi City and will follow in several other places.
6. Closing potholes immediately
In a certain period of time, asphalt roads require maintenance. Small holes should be patched immediately. Because if left unchecked, the small holes in the asphalt road could soon widen. The asphalt roads are getting worse and worse. The stagnant water in the holes makes the asphalt road construction weaker and at the same time endangers road users.
7. Choose and plant the right shade trees
In big cities, shade trees are needed to reduce vehicle noise on the highway and also to absorb dirty air from vehicle fumes. However, the selection and planting of these shade trees need to be considered so as not to damage the road and not endanger road users during the rainy season.
Several types of trees are recommended for shade on the sides of the road, including tamarind trees, cape trees, walnut trees and kepel trees that make have a taproot character, long-lived and not easily broken or collapsed. While the type of shade tree that should be avoided is the trembesi tree. Trembesi tree is a type of large tree whose roots can damage the road. In addition, the branches of the trembesi tree are quite fragile, so they are easily broken when exposed to heavy winds.
Well, those are some ways you can do to get a good asphalt road. It is undeniable that it takes a lot of time and money to maintain asphalt roads so that they are still suitable for use. Good asphalt roads can only be obtained with proper initial work, proper maintenance and wise use.
